Hearing Is a Partnership Between the Ear and Brain

Hearing begins when sound reaches the ear, but listening depends on an entire pathway working together. The outer ear collects sound, the middle ear transfers vibration, the inner ear converts that movement into nerve signals, and the brain helps recognise what those signals mean.

The outer ear collects sound and the middle ear transfers vibration through the eardrum and tiny hearing bones.

Inner Ear

The cochlea contains specialised sensory cells that help convert mechanical movement into electrical activity.

The auditory nerve carries signals towards the brain, where sound is organised, recognised and understood.

How Sound Becomes Meaning

Hearing is a chain of connected events.

A conversation, a doorbell or a piece of music begins as vibration in the environment. For us to understand it, sound must travel through the hearing system and be converted into information the brain can interpret.

The outer ear gathers sound waves and directs them through the ear canal towards the eardrum.

The eardrum and three tiny middle-ear bones move in response to sound and transfer vibration towards the inner ear.
